Archeology and Rock Art of Newberry Cave

Dr. Alan Garfinkel Gold, of AGG Associates, will present  Archeology and Rock Art of Newberry Cave:  Ritual, Ceremony and Symbolism of the Desert Bighorn Hunters.

Discovered at this remarkable cave located in the eastern Mojave Desert were over 1000 fragmentary split twig figurines and other magical objects associated with a series of rituals intended to ensure the success of the hunting of bighorn sheep. During the presentation, Dr. Gold will reveal the story behind the rock paintings and these curious figurines crafted by what some researchers argue was a men's desert bighorn hunting society.   He will also review the evidence of an elaborate series of rituals.
